Corky Laing's MOUNTAIN - Live In Belgium, 2LP

Corky Laing, the last surviving member of Mountain's original lineup, has been keeping the legacy of one of the first hard rock bands alive since 2015 with "Corky Laing's Mountain". The live album, recorded in Belgium in 2019, revisits Mountain's greatest hits, a band founded 50 years prior, which Laing joined shortly after its inception. It's a kind of anniversary album, where Laing's band has recorded a greatest hits live album.

Most of the songs are from the band's most successful phase in the early 70s, though the setlist also features tracks like "Long Red" from Leslie West's solo album "Mountain" and "Why Dotcha," which West, Bruce & Laing released after Mountain had disbanded for the first time after only a few years.

The power trio demonstrates why Mountain was rightly called one of the first hard rock bands, particularly with the two smash hits "Mississippi Queen" with its introductory cowbells and "Never In My Life," which gets rock fans' hearts racing and also shows the timelessness of many Mountain songs, including the lyrically darker "Nantucket Sleighride," for which Laing draws a comparison between whalers and musicians who wanted too much and were dragged into the depths or vanished into oblivion.

With this album, which is also well-produced in terms of sound engineering, Laing shows that Mountain's music has not disappeared into obscurity but is being kept alive by the band. In this regard, one can quote a line from Laing's countryman, Neil Young: "Rock 'n' Roll Will Never Die."
