RATKEN stands for powerful progressive metal rock with deep roots in classic prog rock. Inspired by bands and artists such as Pink Floyd, Yes, early Genesis, and Nektar—especially their unforgettable mastermind Roye Albrighton—the band combines sophisticated compositions with emotional depth, catchy melodies, and a clear message.

The formation of RATKEN in 2024 is closely tied to the musical history of former Nektar keyboardist Klaus Henatsch. Following the death of Roye Albrighton in 2016, Henatsch dedicated himself to carrying on his musical legacy. With his band New Nektar, founded in 2018, he kept the music of the progressive rock legend Nektar alive and released the album Megalomania, which received outstanding reviews internationally. However, due to disputes over the use of the name, New Nektar had to disband in 2023. The album Megalomania was also withdrawn from the market as a precautionary measure.

With RATKEN, Klaus Henatsch is now continuing on this path under a new name and with new creative freedom. At the same time, the band builds on the tradition of Nektar’s live lineups as well as the albums Fortyfied (2009) and Time Machine (2013). In addition to their own compositions, preserving Roye Albrighton’s musical legacy is one of the band’s central concerns. That is why selected Nektar classics as well as Roye Albrighton’s compositions continue to feature in their live setlist.

Musically, RATKEN moves between atmospheric soundscapes and powerful rock and metal passages. Characteristic of the band are the shifts—typical of progressive rock—between complex, odd time signatures and straightforward rock grooves. Dark, aggressive moments clash with melancholic moods and are repeatedly interrupted by calm, emotional passages. This results in multi-layered compositions that are both musically sophisticated and immediately accessible.

Thematically, RATKEN addresses the challenges of a world marked by crises, environmental disasters, and increasing social polarization. The lyrics explore violence, abuse of power, and developments that threaten democracy, as well as the responsibility of each individual. Despite this critical perspective, however, a glimmer of hope is always evident. RATKEN’s music serves as a call to action—to not passively accept injustices, to take a stand, and to maintain humanity, compassion, and optimism in the process.

RATKEN bridges the past and future of progressive rock—paying homage to a great musical legacy while also serving as a distinct voice addressing the challenges of our time.
